Sportique - Don't Believe A Word I Say

matinée 017  /  September 2000

Exclusive new single from Oxford, England four-piece featuring legendary pop stars Gregory Webster (Razorcuts, the Carousel, Saturn V), Rob Pursey (Marine Research, Heavenly), Mark Flunder (TV Personalities, McTells), and Amelia Fletcher (Marine Research, Heavenly, Talulah Gosh). The superb title track, previewed during a John Peel session last September, features shimmering guitars and keyboards, handclaps, and nice female harmonies. New song "A Nation of Soul" on the flip showcases trilling keyboards and Greg and Amelia sharing vocals on an anthemic dual chorus. The band will play a handful of East Coast dates in December in support of the single and forthcoming Matinée album "Modern Museums."

Tracklisting:
  1. Don't Believe A Word I Say
  2. A Nation Of Soul

reviews

Lighter and scrummier than most of their debut album last year, "Don't Believe" has Gregory yelping like a man possessed (by his younger self) while Amelia Fletcher lends backing vocals and guitars and keyboards gambol playfully in the fields of indiedom. The sort of record that 7" singles were designed for - one that seems over all too soon and you can just flick the stylus back for another go straightaway.   --In Love With These Times In Spite Of These Times

A collaboration of some of C86's legendary pop stars Gregory Webster (Razorcuts, the Carousel, Saturn V), Rob Pursey (Marine Research, Heavenly), Mark Flunder (TV Personalities, McTells), and Amelia Fletcher (Marine Research, Heavenly, Talulah Gosh), with this line-up alone how could you doubt the music of Sportique? From the label who brought you The Lucksmiths,The Windmills, Northern Portrait, Brighter and The Siddeleys, this is another Matinée's cream of the crop.   --Noisebox

New single from this Oxford pop super-group, featuring folks who have at one time or another been in the Razorcuts, the Carousel, Talulah Gosh, Heavenly, Marine Research, McTells, or the Television Personalities. So, how is it? Great! The A-side is a catchy sing-along with jangling guitars and organs and hand claps and la-la-las. The b-side, though not as exciting, is a slower northern-soul type song with even more organs. Nice! MTQ=2/2   --IndiePages

Gregory Webster is already in my indie rock hall of fame from his work with the Razorcuts but Sportique is nearly as good. Plus he has some ex-members of Heavenly/Marine Research in the band and "Don't Believe A Word I Say" is an epic of epic proportions! The flip was a bit slower and more introspective.   --Dagger

Sportique consists of various people who've been involved in indiepop since the mid 80s and are well known in the scene - Mark Flunder, Rob Pursey, Amelia Fletcher and Gregory Webster. The title track is in their usual style, ie indiepop with a slight mod touch and 60s style organ. When I first heard the b-side I didn't take any notice of what it was called, I just out it on. I thought it sounded a bit like old style soul music, and then I realised it was called A Nation of Soul - makes sense! It's not an out-and-out soul thing though, there is still an indiepop feel to it.   --Aquamarine

Two songs of casual UK rock n roll, with touches of organ, a lot of guitars and Amelia Fletcher singing backup vocals!   --Twee Kitten
