Red Sleeping Beauty - You Are The Kind EP
Red Sleeping Beauty - You Are The Kind EP
The classic ’90s releases from Stockholm indie pop quartet Red Sleeping Beauty have long been out of print and unavailable on streaming services. That’s about to change (finally, shout pop connoisseurs around the world).
In October, the band will release Pop Songs—a 50-track double-CD retrospective: Disc one includes early releases on international pop labels Marsh Marigold, Motorway, Somersault, Sunday, and Quince Records, while Disc two features rare tracks contributed to various vinyl records, CDs, and compilation cassettes, plus 15 previously unreleased songs.
As a teaser, the You Are The Kind EP is out now — and it’s a tasty one. It features the band’s very first released song, ‘You Are The Kind’ (originally from the International Pop 7”), ‘Pop Song’ from the debut album Bedroom, ‘Hey!’ from the celebrated Japanese compilation Wheels Go Round, and ‘Strife’, a previously unreleased track from the band’s early bedroom-pop duo days.

reviews
To celebrate more than three decades of making great indie, Sweden's Red Sleeping Beauty are here with a new EP, and news of a spectacular-sounding forthcoming 50-track compilation. Collecting four examples of the band's brand of smart pop, the You Are The Kind EP features "Pop Song", a breezy gem from their Bedroom (1995) album, and the title cut of this ep, from the 1992 International Pop EP compilation. "Hey!", a bit of youthful fun, is from an old Japanese compilation, and it skirts along as light as air. That one is a real highlight here, as is "Strife", a previously-unreleased bit of DIY goodness. This new You Are The Kind release serves as an appetizer for the upcoming banquet of that just-announced 50-track compilation. Red Sleeping Beauty cover a few styles within the jangle-pop genre, and there's enough heart and smarts in these four songs to make contemporary acts a bit jealous. And rightly so as this is great stuff. You can order You Are The Kind by Red Sleeping Beauty via Matinée Recordings.—A Pessimist Is Never Disappointed
After their recent multi-volume “Late Night” series transitioned them into the realms of electro-pop, Stockholm-based trio Red Sleeping Beauty has finally returned to the indie-pop essence that made them legends in the late ’90s and early 2000s with this remarkable “You Are The Kind” EP that cover four unheralded tracks from their earlier days. With three interconnected yet distinctly different nuances, the title track opener navigates a space between Pale Saints-style sophisti-pop and twee-inflected guitar pop. In contrast, the washed-out, ’80s Talulah Gosh-inspired sound of “Hey!” evokes the kind of anthem that countless cardigan wearers might have shuffled to on the dancefloor during the heyday of Sarah Records. However, the standout tracks on this release harken back to the bands earliest days with the Marsh Marigold and Siesta labels, as “Pop Strong” and “Strife” combine disinterested, Anglophile indie pop female vocals with a fresh, resonating, fragile guitar pop that is reminiscent of the East Village aesthetic. It’s a joy to have Red Sleeping Beauty back at their wonderfully invigorating jangly indie-pop best and this acts as something as a precursor to a 50 tracks retrospective of their earliest works that includes a dozen new tracks that will be out in October 2025. —Janglepophub
