This is music that comes from one of the most resilient sub-genres of alt-rock. For those operating now who are taking leads from mid-Eighties Depeche Mode and New Order, synth-pop continues to offer a way for artists to serve up wonderful music, sometimes needing nothing more than a set of hands to push the keys and start the samples. My comments are not meant to be dismissive. What I'm trying to highlight is that 50 years ago, it was a guitar and a few chords, and yet after that, the New Wave boom also created a legacy ever bit as inspiring as that of punk. And one which could be joined with the right equipment. Sweden's Azure Blue, taking cues from those pioneers like New Order, Depeche Mode, The Associates, The Beloved, and so on, are here with a new record. The Night of the Stars features tracks which are sleek and lean, with an approach which is precise in emotional impact. Tobias Isaksson is Azure Blue and he's been making music like this for more than a decade. The material wastes no time in defining exactly how synth-pop should be done. Single "Rise", a favorite of ours from 2023, kicks things off. The track, a highlight here, has an energy which is engaging, as does the fine "Under the Stars", another number with real momentum. Elsewhere, the down-tempo "Three Times the Drama" is affecting in a dramatic fashion, while "Define Your Dreams" mines a similar brand of synth-rock. There's a kind of uniformity to the tunes of Azure Blue, but a careful listen reveals twists and turns in mood which are quite subtle. Fans of any of the bands I've mentioned should find something here that has resonance. The Night of the Stars is full of slick keyboard figures and supple lines of rhythmic underpinning, but it's also a warm record. There's plenty of emotion here too, making this the best kind of synth-rock. —A Pessimist Is Never Disappointed

 

Azure Blue is the brainchild of Tobias Isaksson, one of Sweden’s most internationally acclaimed indie artists, ‘The Night of The Stars’ is an album that expands upon the previous work and adds more of a pop sensibility and vintage overall sound that encompasses a global sense of self and an introverted take on self value. In our opinion, one of the immutably timeless genres in pop music is Nordic synth pop. It always satisfies and, at its best, its soaring sounds inspires and comforts in equal measure. And when engaging with the best of Nordic synth pop, Azure Blue earns a prominent place. The project of Sweden's Tobias Isaksson, Azure Blue has just released its sixth album, Night of the Stars, and it compares favorably to his best work. The warmth of the arrangements is match by the lyrical content, creating a coherent and consistent message of human interconnectedness and interdependence. Readers not familiar with the delights of Tobias' artistry will likely find some appealing reminders of New Order. But for those of us who have been following the man, Night of the Stars is yet another highlight in his discography. It’s been a busy December on my end, so I apologize if I haven’t hyped up this new Azure Blue record enough. The Night of the Stars hit just over a week ago, and it’s possibly my favorite work of Tobias Isaksson’s ongoing project. While he’s been dabbling in building electronic hooks over the years, I’m not sure he’s had the perfect pop song like “The Miracle,” which I’ve got streaming below; it’s got a thumping drive to it, matched by gentle vocals…and even gets a little horn work in there, for all you nostalgic pop fans. “Under the Stars” is another standout, hitting you with synthetic pop from the moment you press play; the song then churns in on itself and delivers a smooth undercurrent that soothes and bubbles the way pop should. I must admit I was never grabbed by Azure Blue’s earlier work back in the day. That changed when hearing 2019’s Images of You album and my ears haven’t, er, looked back since. Given that The Night of the Stars features last year’s brilliant Rise single I don’t expect that to change and tracks like Three Times The Drama cement that fact. —Records I Like

Under stjärnhimlen väver Azure Blue en pulserande symfoni som skimrar av vackra melodier - och hopp. Det tog Tobias Isaksson, Azure Blue, hela fem år att följa upp förra plattan Images Of You som vi recenserade med medelgoda betyg. Azure Blue är elektronisk pop med en fot i indie och en fot i new romantic. Där emellan har Isaksson vägt olika tungt på foten, men alltid presterat en form av intressant drömpop som hittat en stor publik. Både i Sverige och internationellt. Priser, turnéer, medieframträdanden … you name it. På The Night Of The Stars presterar han tio låtar. Det har fått ta tid och resan har varit lång. Med sig in i arbetet tar han hela sin artistiska karriär. Ända från indierockåren i Göteborg till kärleken i referenser som New Order, OMD och Pet Shop Boys. Allt med en sorgkant där han bearbetat sin moders plötsliga bortgång i processen. Men hur låter det då? Fantastiskt. Drygt 13 år efter den tokhyllade debutplattan ”Rule of Thirds” känns det som Isaksson landat i receptet på vad han älskar att göra – och publiken vill ha. Av tio låtar finns inga kompromisser. Varken när det gäller melodier eller produktion där legendaren Ollie Olson lagt sin hand på slutprodukten. Hela fyra singlar har föregått albumet (en pandemieffekt), men du hittar lätt fyra lika starka spår bland de övriga. Vemodiga och vackra synthpop-anthems i aptitliga låtlängder. Kompisar som Paola och The Land Below – och inte minst vapendragaren SMIDVIK – återkommer i gästlistan. ”Under The Stars” är underbar new romantic för 20-talet. ”What Is Love?” är Göteborgssmäktande indietronica som lyfter festen. En personlig favorit är annars ”The Miracle” som ger mig en känslomässig uppgörelse med någon slags Cure-”Close To Me”-vibe. För att nämna någotDet finns få saker mer att begära. Popsnillet Tobias Isaksson är tillbaka som Azure Blue, fem år efter förra plattan. Soundet på denna azurens sjätte fullängdare sedan debuten 2011, är lyxigare än tidigare, mycket tack vare namnkunnige mixaren Ollie Olson, och de dyra beatsen och de glittriga ljudbyggena pulserar självsäkert ut ur högtalarna. Men mycket är också sig likt. Isaksson är alltjämt en otröstlig melankoliker med ett outsinligt lager med starka synthpopmelodier att ta av. Lyssna bara på New Order-doftande singeln ”Three Times the Drama”, en av årets finaste poplåtar, med en klassisk isakssonsk sångmelodi som knäcker hjärtat på vilken hårdnackad jävel som helst. Och det finns goda skäl till denna melankoli; tidigare i år gick Isakssons mor plötsligt bort, och skivan är också tillägnad henne. Mer förkrossande vacker popmelankoli hittar man på näst sista spåret, ”The Miracle”. Till ett nästan tweepop-aktigt driv i melodin (Isaksson har ju trots allt ett förflutet i Irene), svepande synthar som för tankarna till Radio Dept. anno Pet Grief, och en manisk/euforisk/fantastisk saxofon sjunger Isaksson från djupet av sitt hjärta om den kärlek som alla går och väntar på. Det är en magisk låt. Och det finns ännu fler. Ska jag klaga på något är det att de rena upptempolåtarna tenderar att låta aningen likartade, om än långt ifrån svaga, och är kanske ett par tre stycken för många till antalet. ”Define Your Dreams” dök dessutom upp som singel redan för tre år sedan, och även om det är en mer än habil låt känns den nu uttjänt. Men det här är relativt bagatellartat, för när Isaksson istället tar ut svängarna, som på suggestiva ”Mia Luce” (herregud, gitarren!), snuddar vid ett dovt, sexigt mörker som i ”Visions and Themes”, eller träffar mitt i prick på poptavlan som i till exempel nyss nämnda ”Three Times the Drama”, är det få i detta lands popskrå som slår honom. På det hela taget är detta utan tvekan Azure Blues mest helgjutna platta på väldigt länge. Kanske rent av sedan debuten. —482 MHz
