In that time they achieved one flexidisc, one play on John Peel, a handful of enthusiasts and a clutch of fine pop songs. They had become heartily sick of being called the cream of Devon. The sought-after flexi, which featured the Visitors' Goldmining, was issued on the Sha-La-La imprint, and has maintained a steady band of admirers since its release in 1988. That aside, all anyone ever heard of the Visitors was on tape, passed from hand to hand and degrading with every copy made. Matinée Recordings has crossed the Atlantic to dig out the original tapes for Goldmining and ten other pop gems, all dating from 86-88. These songs, as much as many of The Visitors' contemporaries', perfectly capture something about being a teenager, and are lost treats from a time when a particular kind of pure guitar pop still roamed the streets of the small-towns and suburbs of the UK. Their songs were epic, but never pompous, instant, but never obvious - the essential essence of all great pop music. Singer Johnny Johnson was frequently labeled a female Morrissey - a journalistic absurdity favoured by certain writers at the time, but ten years on the songs speak for themselves and comparisons with anyone are hard to make. At the beginning of 1988 the NME predicted that The Siddeleys would join the big league and become one of the major events of the future. Sadly, despite the fierce adoration of a legion of fans and affirmations from the press, the story was over at the end of the first chapter. All that remained for Siddeleys fans was the hope of finding a spare copy of one of their two insanely rare singles - sometimes fetching upwards of £50 each - and the memory of two John Peel sessions. Slum Clearance collects sixteen songs from the singles, Peel sessions, and two compilation appearances in one beautiful historical artefact complete with photos and extensive linernotes. Raised on punk rock and groomed at Alan McGee's Living Room club, Razorcuts emerged with the likes of Primal Scream and the Shop Assistants, combining a sunblasted 60's beat jangle with the DIY ethics of punk. A glorious riot of singles followed before Razorcuts signed to McGee's Creation Records and switched into long-playing mode; then retired, integrity intact, at the turn of the 90's. The UK scene Razorcuts represented led onto the staunchly anti-rock scene epitomized by Sarah Records, and helped set the parameters for much of the global indiepop scene we know today in the US, Japan, Sweden, Australia, and elsewhere. The music is warm and familiar - recalling the classic jangle of The Pastels and The Wedding Present as well as the infectious summery strum of Jonathan Richman. As usual, things are lyrically close to home. The opening track "Transpontine" dissects Melbourne's famed north-south rivalry, whilst (metaphorically perhaps) warning of the dangers of trekking too far afield. The dynamically bipolar "Successlessness" is a consolation to a disillusioned lover with sublime 12-string guitar adding just enough chime to reassure the listener of the song's sentiment. As always, there are lots of guitars, some soothing basslines, and a singing drummer who's far better than Phil Collins, but this time there's also a horn section having a party, some fiery organs, a string section who dig Phil Spector, and a lazy pedal steel. 'A Hiccup in Your Happiness' kicks the album off with an uplifting nod of reassurance to a girl named Louise. Coincidentally, this song also marks the recorded debut for new Lucksmiths guitarist Louis Richter. It's a dancefloor sizzler! As well as the aforementioned strings and horns, the song features some seriously funky guitar and a bassline possibly borrowed from Orange Juice. From there, the floor just keeps rumbling with 'The Music Next Door' and its pleasantly off-kilter guitar riff. By now it's evident Marty Donald's turns-of-phrase seem to have ripened with age, while Tali White's vocals are as warm as ever. As with the last few albums, producer Craig Pilkington was put to work on string and brass arrangements, and he's done some seriously wonderful things on 'Warmer Corners'. Notably, the string section on first single 'The Chapter in Your Life Entitled San Francisco' drops the song off effortlessly at the bridge (and the monumental first ever use of wah-wah). Later, the fruits of bassist Mark Monnone's relocation to Tasmania are on display, namely in the hobo lament 'I Don't Want to Walk Around Alone No More' which meanders along gently and runs head first into 'The Fog of Trujillo'. The former features superb whistling and beautiful acoustic guitar, while the latter, a sort of paean to a daydream, invites the horns back for another sangria and a rockin' party again ensues. As if that weren't enough, the album features seven more hits including an earnest Rickenbacker jangler called 'Sunlight In A Jar' and the tale of a Kansas City barbecue called 'Fiction' that builds to a zydeco wigout! We kid you not. As lead singer of the seminal Talulah Gosh, the proto-riot grrrl Heavenly and the classy pop act Marine Research, Amelia Fletcher was the voice and face that launched a thousand fanzines, an iconic presence whose influence can be traced in bands as diverse as Le Tigre and Belle and Sebastian. The short-but-spiky ‘Applecore’ ups the sass quotient as Amelia demands answers from an indecisive lover to a series of oblique questions over a stop-start bassline, whereas the spacey-keyboard sounds of 'Fahrenheit 451', the heartfelt '(I Always Love You When I'm) Leaving You' and the haunting album closer 'Dead and Gone' lend the album variety and depth.

‘6 Billion People’ is Tender Trap’s most fully realised work to date, a collection of sumptuous tunes and bold arrangements that makes a claim to be one of the best pop albums of the year. Think The Only Ones meets The Primitives with the recommended daily dosage of tambourines and you’re nearly there.

‘Tired Of Sleeping’ is a jangledelic ode to sleeping with the radio on, complete with multi-tracked 12-string Rickenbacker action straight from the early days of Creation or Cherry Red. ‘Last Time I Saw Andrew’ moves us into the ‘90’s with a lazy, looping, slow burning nostalgia somewhat like a cross between Slowdive and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. It's dream pop-tastic. ‘Susan's In The Sky’ is the title track from Bubblegum Lemonade's second single. An everyday tale of an air hostess and her slacker boyfriend caught up in a Romeo and Juliet type scenario, it's a sunshine wall of pop with Rickenbacker guitars, tambourines and nice organ bits. A classic!

‘Penny Fountain’ opens side two of the album with some Paisley Underground inspired bittersweet guitar pop. It’s a swinging mini epic that should have been another single. ‘My Dreams Of You’ contains Rickenbacker riffs, harmony vocals and portamento keyboards. Catchier than Byrd flu, it’s west coast indie pop art and the perfect prelude to the sixties come down sunshine guitar pop with guitar freak out ending that follows in ‘Lost Summer Days’.

Subliminally suggested by Vance Packard, ‘Here They Come’ masks criticism of the morally corrupt elements of the advertising industry behind jangling guitars and rich harmonies, while ‘Tyler’ is Rickenbacker pop about a cat. You don’t get many pop songs about cats these days, do you? Finally, ‘Last Weekend’ is some eighties sounding, major seventh acoustic strumming with strings and tambourine about the breakup of a long distance relationship. The band was going for Felt meets The Field Mice but ended up with Prefab Sprout instead. Ha!

With an educated nod to its influences, remarkably catchy songs, and stunning pop melodies, Bubblegum Lemonade remind us that old school indie is always in style. ‘Doubleplusgood’ is a superb example of the vibrant new music coming out of Glasgow and another modern classic from Matinée!

Over the course of 15 years and almost as many albums and international tours, Australian popstars The Lucksmiths have penned some of the most adored songs this side of the pop underground and built up a massive fanbase in the process.

Most recent studio album ‘Warmer Corners’ received considerable praise, with Pitchfork calling it “idiosyncratic but accessible, literate but unpretentious, gentle but not weak, sincere not so much in presentation as in presence”. Two singles lifted from the album — “A Hiccup in Your Happiness” and “The Chapter in Your Life Entitled San Francisco” — both received heavy rotation across the globe. The latter also found its way onto Qantas Airlines in-flight playlist in 2006 — an achievement not celebrated lightly by a band with an enduring penchant for the somewhat ridiculous and irrelevant.

More recently, 2007 saw the release of a b-sides, rarities, and live compilation entitled ‘Spring a Leak’ with an accompanying set of US tour dates. At 45 songs in length, this exhaustive double-CD was well received and hearty enough to sate even the most impoverished Lucksmiths fan whilst awaiting a new batch of songs. In reviewing the album, Time Out Chicago declared “If a band can be this good on its cast-offs, imagine what the albums are like”.

A trip to Tasmania has yielded ‘First Frost’—the finest and most dynamic Lucksmiths album to date. Camped out in the wilderness, the band was free to explore and expand the musical palette, and with all four members contributing songs, the end result is a 14-song masterpiece bound to surprise anyone who thought they had The Lucksmiths pegged as sounding too much like The Lucksmiths.

On the album, the bands’ trademark lyrical hooks shine warmer than ever. Opening cut "The Town and the Hills" sets out some of the album’s central themes, examining the distance (geographical and metaphorical) between city and country. Meanwhile, "California in Popular Song" is a sweet slice of sun-kissed pastoral pop that combines sweeping strings, a throaty low-down guitar, some gentle fingerpicking and Tali White's pensive vocal to become your new favorite Lucksmiths song.

Recent live hits, the jangly "Good Light" and the surprisingly glam-rockin' "A Sobering Thought (Just When One Was Needed)"—the latter concerning a late-night drunken escapade at a public swimming pool — both receive a fine rendering on ‘First Frost’. Elsewhere on the album, The Lucksmiths' familiar strum is traded in for brief dalliances with a disorderly fuzz pedal, a choir of misplaced mittens, and a bird that just wants to know why you got drunk. The band’s debut album ‘The Province Complains’ was released in 2007 to widespread acclaim, earning favorable comparisons to indie legends The Smiths, Felt, Orange Juice, Pulp, and Belle & Sebastian, among others. All Music Guide declared it “a classic-in-waiting filled with durable, memorable, carefully constructed songs, almost any one of which could have been a single;” while NME called it “an indie-pop hallelujah” and Q Magazine wrote “Cats on Fire hit a high mark few other earnest young men can get near.”

The new album ‘Our Temperance Movement’ is even better still, demonstrating the band’s flair for delivering sumptuous jangle pop with enticing melodies and intelligent lyrics. The album expands upon the traditional guitar, bass, and drums with liberal bursts of piano, organ, clarinet, banjo, glockenspiel and other percussion which help to showcase the extraordinary style of singer Mattias Björkas and his poetic, sardonic, and rather eccentric take on the world.

Among the album’s many highlights, ‘Horoscope’ tackles a classic relationship challenge with a lovely dose of female backing vocals, while ‘The Borders Of This Land’ is jaunty, smart continental pop with just the right amount of attitude. Meanwhile, ‘Letters From A Voyage To Sweden’ sets the tale of a seedy ferry ride between Scandinavian countries to jangling guitars, and ‘The Steady Pace’ opens with a double entendre before layering in Spanish guitars and building to an absolutely soaring chorus.
