Bubblegum Lemonade - Love's Young Nightmare EP
Bubblegum Lemonade - Love's Young Nightmare EP
'Love's Young Nightmare' is the fantastic third single from the forthcoming 'Lawrence of Suburbia' album by Scotland's Bubblegum Lemonade. The title track, which came to Laz in a dream, is an instantly lovable indie disco floor filler with a brilliant but simple monster guitar riff. The EP also features two non-album tracks: a slower, pensive stunner called 'Sad Comedian' and the rocking anthem 'America Calling' celebrating the success of British performers in the States by picking up the pace and incorporating nice female backing vocals from Sandra of Strawberry Whiplash.

Another morning treat as I opened the inbox was a fresh batch of tunes from Bubblegum Lemonade. The opening track is one of the singles from the forthcoming Lawrence of Suburbia LP. That opening single sees Laz playing in power-pop mode, albeit still dripping with the melodic sweetness of his earlier work. It does fit right into the vein of where a lot of the pop resurgence comes from, but there are some special treats from the non-album cuts featured here. Personally, I’m drawn to “America Calling” as the song features Sandra from Strawberry Whiplash lending her powerful pipes to build the hooks. Can’t wait to hear the entirety of this new album, but for now, a sprinkle of new music is just the right touch for a Friday. We previously have shared a couple of singles from the upcoming Lawrence of Suburbia by Glasgow jangle pop master Laz McCluskey, AKA Bubblegum Lemonade. We now have a double treat: (1) Third single "Love's Young Nightmare", and (2) An EP with that album track packaged with two non-album tracks "Sad Comedian" and "America Calling". The lead track is an upbeat jangle anthem. For the second, Laz slows the pace for a lovely, thoughtful tune. The third amps up the pace again and adds the vocals from Sandra, Laz's mate from the Strawberry Whiplash project. Bubblegum Lemonade has always displayed a deft knack for melody and is locked into what made '80-'90s guitar pop special The three-song EP is titled Love's Young Nightmare and is available digitally via Matinée Recordings. —When You Motor Away
Scottish poster Laz McCluskey is back with three new songs (two of which won't be on the upcoming Bubblegum Lemonade album). The first one, "Love's Young Nightmare," has some cool buzzy, buzzsaw guitar and choppy rhythm. "Sad Comedian" is a slower, more pensive cut ("Sad comedian, they're laughing at you…" ) while "America Calling" (my fave of the bunch here with backing vocals from Sandra from Strawberry Whiplash) picks up the pace and is a call to arms of all the good and discounted American musicians. Lawrence of Suburbia will be out soon so this EP will hopefully whet your appetite (first time I've ever used the word whet in a review, so there). —Dagger Zine
